Turtles and Tortoises
When giant dinosaurs walked the Earth, turtles crawled and swam around. About 185 million years ago, the first turtles lived, dinosaurs wiped out, but turtles survived.Many different types of turtles can still be found today.Tortoises are turtles who spend their entire lives on land. Other turtles spend a significant portion of their time in the water.

Why do Turtles have shells?
The only reptile having a shell is the turtle. The shell is comprised of a substance that is either bones or leathery. A shell functions similarly to a suit of armour. The majority of turtles can defend themselves by retracting their heads, necks, and legs into their shells. The carapace is the upper section of the shell that protects a turtle’s back. The plastron is the lower portion.Brown, black, or olive green turtle shells are the most common.On the shells of some turtles, there are red, orange, yellow, or grey patches or lines.The painted turtle is a brightly coloured creature.The plastron is yellow, and the carapace is black or olive with red marks around the rim.Tortoises have large, hefty shells that defend them from land predators.Sea turtles have light shells that make it easier for them to swim.

What’s a Turtle shell made of?
The shells of most turtles are coated in horny scales known as scouts. The scouts are constructed of skin tissue and overlap to form a hard and robust shell. Some turtles aren’t equipped with scouts. They have delicate shells that are coated in tough skin. Many bones make up the interior of a turtle’s shell. Parts of a turtle’s backbone and ribs are among these bones. Because the backbone and ribs are linked directly to the shell, a turtle cannot crawl out of it.
