تمساح النيل أو كما يطلق عليه التمساح النيلي ويعد ثاني أكبر أنواع الزواحف المتبقية في العالم بعد تمساح المياه المالحة ، ويوجد هذا النوع بكثرة في مناطق متفرقة في قارة أفريقيا بالجزء الجنوبي للصجراء الكبري خاصة في المناطق الوسطي والشرقية والجنوبية منها ، ويعيش هذا النوع في بيئة بها ماء عذبة كالأنهار والبحيرات رغم إمكانية معيشته في المياه المالحة ،وينتشر أفريقيا حيث يوجد في السودان ومصر وتنزانيا و أوغندا و زيمبابوي والسنغال و زامبيا وجنوب أفريقيا وبتسوانا والصومال وإثيوبيا ، وكان في الماضي يعيش هذا النوع شمال نهر النيل وصولًا للدلتا و في عصر ما قبل التاريخ كانت تصل إلي فلسطين ، ويصل طول التمساح بين 4.1 متر إلي 5 أمتار ،ويبلغ وزنه مايقرب من 410 كيلوجرام كما يوجد أنواع منه يصل طولها إلي 6.1متر ويبلغ وزنها 900 كيلوجرام ،و يغطي جسمه من الخارج جلد سميك صلب لونه أخضر غامق ،و تمتلك تماسيح النيل 66 سنًا ذو بشكل مخروطي وتوجد أعينه وأنفه وإذنيه في قمة رأسه و العين بها جفن ثالث لحمايته تحت الماء
Great Nile Crocodile

تمساح النيل العظيم
يمكن لتمساح النيل أن يعيش 45سنة في البرية وضمن الأسر يمكن أن يصل سنه إلي 80 سنة ، ويمكن للذكور التزاوج عند وصول طولهم ل10 أقدام وسنهم ل10 سنوات والأناث بطول 6.5قدم و10 سنوات ، موسم التزاوج لهذا النوع في شهر يوليو ويتم التزاوج في المياه الضحلة أما في شهري نوفمبر وديسمبر فتنواجد الأناث علي حواف الشواطئ الرملية أو ضفاف النهر ،ويمكن للأناث أن تضع ما يتراوح بين 25إلي 100 بيضة بالقرب من حافة الشاطئ في عش يغطيه الرمال وتظل تحرسه لمدة شهرين أو ثلاث أشهر ، من المعروف عن هذا النوع من التماسيح أنهم يأكلون كثيرًا وغذائهم الرئيسي الأسماك بنسبة 70% وبعض الحيوانات التي تكون قريبة من الشاطئ كالحمير الوحشية و أفرس النهر والقوارض والطيور والجيف والتماسيح أيضًا ،وأحيانًا يبتلعون الحصي لانه يساعدهم علي عملية الهضم لانهم يعانون من بطئ في عملية التمثيل الغذائي

تمساح النيل المفترس
يمكن لتمساح النيل أن يتربص لساعات طويلة ولأيام بل و لأسابيع طويلة انتظارًا للحظة الحاسمة التي يقوم فيها بالهجوم علي فريسته ثم جرها للماء ، كما أنه ذكي جدًا وينتظر دائمًا الفرصة المناسبة التي تجعله قريب من فريسته ما يجعل الحيوانات السريعة لا تستيطع أن تهرب منه ،وتماسيح النيل نوع إجتماعي للغاية حيث يمكنها مشاركة تجمعات الأسماك وبجوار جثث الحيوانات الكبيرة في عملية التشمس ، كما يوجد هرم متسلسل خاص بعملية التشارك الغذائي ويحدد وفقًا لحجم التماسيح فالذكور الكبيرة سنًا وحجما في الجزء العلوي من هذا الهرم و تحصل علي الأولوية في الغذاء وأحسن أماكن للتشمس وكل تمساح يعرف ترتيبه بالظبط ، وإذا حدث تمرد و الذي نادرًا ما يحدث تكون النتيجة مرعبة حتي الموت

كانوا القدماء المصريين يعتبرون تماسيح النيل رمزًا للخير والشر في آن واحد حيث كان رمزًا للإله سوبك المعبود في الفيوم وفي كوم أمبو ويأخذ شكل تمساح أو انسان برأس تمساح وكان إلهًا يواجه أخطار كثيرة منها أخطار فيضان النيل وكان يمثل رمز الحياة عند البعض والشيطان عن البعض الآخر ، وكان هناك أسطورة تقول أن خوف القدماء المصريين من التماسيح وشراستها كان السبب في عبادتها لتجنب هجماتهم الشرسة فكرموهم كآلهة لدرجة أنهم قاموا بتحنيطهم بنفس الكتان المستخدم مع البشر وحشو جثثهم بورق البردي ،وذكر المؤرخ هيرودوت أنها كانت تزين بالحلي وتقدس جدًا وكانت رمز للديانة في مصر القديمة حيث وجدوا الباحثين نصوص مكتوبة علي الورق البردي من آلالف السنين حيث كانت تقدم أحيانًا كقرابين للآلهة كما اعتبروها رمزًا للخصوبة بسبب تكاثرها السريع
